The epics of Greek speaking people in Southern Apulia (Italy)

Dr. Francesco Giannachi (Lecce)

Dr. Francesco GIannachi

The lesson will deal with a not yet edited poem, orally transmitted into the Greek speaking area of Salento (Apulia, Italy). It is a "griko" lament for a natural disaster, a hailstorm happened in 1567. Centuries of oral transmission have changed in the mind of the people the destination of the poem. They do not recite the poem in order to record the sorrow for the haistorm but they remenber these verses to exalt the figures of Christ and Mary as epic eroes.
